We live in a world of distractions. Sometimes people even seek distractions (which, when you really think about it, is a bit crazy). So it is somewhat expected that when we come into Mass, it hard for us to avoid having things distract us. One of the worst distractions is when we allow ourselves to be bored with the liturgy, the Scripture readings, and the prayers (remember: we cause that to happen, nothing else does). We somewhat intentionally allow ourselves to believe we do not need to pay attention. If we really did pay attention and realize the gravity of what we are hearing, then we would be thanking the Lord all the way through the Mass because of the stunning nature of the graces that He is giving to us.
That might sound like an exaggeration, but think about the angels in Heaven. According to Holy Scripture, the angels are constantly praising and thanking God for how wonderful He is, and how merciful He is. The are singing, "holy, holy, holy" forever for all eternity. And we, as God's people on Earth, are called to reflect that same praise and live it out every day. That means that we are all on a journey to learn how to praise God better and better every day, and the Mass is our "practice" to make us "perfect"! So let us work on resisting those distractions; let us seek to deepen our appreciation of every word that comes from God. This is what it means to grow in holiness. This is what it means to be on the path of salvation.
