Beware Yon Dragons

A regular running monologue of opinions and ideas from a "country priest".

Reality

April 21, 2026

When a person begins to think that the stove is a dog, or that the car is a garden, then most people recognize that this person has lost touch with reality. There are certain constants that everyone recognizes, or at least used to recognize. It is one thing for a person here or there to lose touch with reality, that happens. People have accidents which cause brain damage, and many people as they get older have mental problems. Yet, when a large portion of a society loses touch with reality, then it becomes an even more definite resonsibility of Catholics to take a stand for reality itself. Watching the changes in hollywood can help us to see the direction that American culture has gone. Things that everyone recognized as reality a mere 60 years ago are "up for grabs" with most hollywood-ites today. Few and far between are the "Jim Caviezels" who hold fast to what is good and true. Back in the late 60's Gene Roddenberry (not a Christian by the largest stretch of the imagination) developed the t.v. series "Star Trek." In one episode, Captain James T. Kirk tells someone, "male and female are universal constants". I can imagine those who watched the show for the first time back then not even batting an eye at the statement, because virtually everyone agreed. You cannot change the defintions of "male" and "female" any more than you can change the definition of black and white. If I call green, "black", and blue, "white", it does not make it so. And, further, if I insist on it to the point of demanding everyone else call green, "black", and blue, "white", then it would be right for the proper authorities to lock me up to keep me from hurting myself or others. Although there are hints that the numbers of people in America buying into this insanity are decreasing, there are still a considerable number of people who disagree with Captain Kirk. Universal constants are just so: universal, and constant. Down deep everyone knows it is so, but some wish to deny reality in an attempt to live in a dream world so that they can avoid feeling resonsible before God (at least until Judgment Day). We must stand fast not just in the truth of Catholic theology, but also in a mere sense of reality. Male and female are universal constants, and the reality of that effects all of society.
