I have often encouraged people to say the prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as a penance after Confession. It is our only hope in this world. Without the loving Heart of our Lord and Savior, we have no hope. Yet, in the modern day and age, the concept of love is so confused, and the meaning of the word "heart" is so out of touch with reality, that I must qualify this glorious truth.
Yes, Jesus loves all people. Yes, Jesus loves His own people in a special way (as a man would love all women in a general way, but his own wife in a special way). That does not mean, however, that Jesus' love is a sappy, syrupy, sentimental feeling that has no real substance. Jesus' love means that He loves enough to discipline His people. Jesus' love means that He loves enough to allow people, who sincerely do not want God in their lives, to live forever without Him. Jesus' love means that He loves enough to tell us the truth, even when we do not want to hear it.
The Sacred Heart of Jesus is not a soft and weak heart. It is true love itself, which is much deeper and more profound than anyone can imagine. If you believe that the Sacred Heart means that He will let you get away with anything you want and just ignore it in the end, you are gravely mistaken. That is not love. In fact, Scripture says that is actually hatred!
The fact that Jesus loves us, means that He does not do things that are unloving. He does not focus all His effort just to make you happy; or to make it so that you are never challenged to be holy; or that you are never offended. He loves you enough to make you sad because sadness, when accepted with humble submission, can lead you to Heaven. He loves you enough to command you to be holy, because without holiness He will not have you with Him in eternity. He loves you enough to offend you, because our sinful hearts resist His salvation.
Yes, Jesus' Sacred Heart loves you. More than you can ever know.
