Many people today in America genuinely believe that the most important aspect of society is politics. As Catholics we should be quick to reject that, but that does not mean that we do not fall into that kind of thinking (especially without even knowing it). Our focus cannot be political issues. Do they matter in our country? Yes, of course they do. Do they matter as much as most people think? No, they really do not. When we speak to others, we need to mention politics at times; but what if that is what we are speaking about the majority of the time? I know someone who talks politics all the time, and during an election year, it is even more than that! If a priest's homilies never mention anything to do with the political climate, then he is neglecting to teach his people. If, however, his homilies are always referring to political issues, then he has forgotten Who is seated at God's right hand! Each of us must remember that Christ is Whom we are to be preaching as King of kings and Lord of lords. Anyone else is just under Him.
