Have you ever considered that it is very likely that St. Joseph died with Mary and Jesus at his bedside? Have you ever considered that it is very likely that the Blessed Virgin received the Eucharist at the hands of St. John when he said Mass? These are just two instances of things never referred to in the Bible, that are interesting to speculate about. There are many more things that God chose not to tell us about. Yet, there is nothing wrong with meditating on the profound realities behind these likely events.
The unbelievably vast amount of things that we are not told about in Scripture are shocking when you begin to go down those "rabbit trails". Yet, if the non-catholic view of the Scriptures is true, then we are basically left in the dark about much of theology. That is what got my attention so many years ago when I was in the process of converting. I started pondering the many things that Scripture does not say or refer to, and discovered that it is not a "book with all the answers" (despite the fact that many non-catholics will tell you that it is).
Once we accept that simple fact, then we are free to accept the deeper fact that God still tells us what we need to know. He makes sure that everything that is necessary is given in one way or another. Either it is in His written word, or it is found in His spoken word of Tradition in the Church. God did not fail to give us anything we need. We only fail to listen to it. It would be just as wrong to insist that only God's spoken revelation is authoritative, as it is to claim that only His written revelation is authoritative.
Let us rejoice that we are not "left as orphans" (John 14) and that the Holy Ghost really does inspire the Popes in union with the Bishops to give us the truth. If there really is something that is not referred to anywhere in the Scriptures or the Traditions of the Church, then we can sit back and confidently say that we do not yet need it. That brings true peace. That allows us to serve God with joy and hope.
