If our view of Jesus does not fit with reality, we are in danger of eternal judgment. Every one of us has an understanding of Who Jesus was, and what He did and said (and for many people their ideas come more from popular ideas and hollywood than truth). If we come across things in the Bible that Jesus did or said that do not fit with our preconceived notions, then we are the ones who need to change (not Jesus!).
How do you think about Jesus' love for all mankind? Is it an egalitarian love that has no distinctions? Is it a soft and mushy love that has no more depth than a vague niceness? Or is it a love that would say something that would offend people? The first two are not the love that we find in Jesus Christ, the Lord of all.
What about yesterday's gospel reading? We read there that Jesus told the Apostles to go only to the Jews and not to the Samaritans (the Samaritans were Jews who had intermarried with pagans for generations). We know that the Samaritans had ungodly practices, and a corrupt form of worship. We also know that they disdained many of the laws of God. So, was Jesus a racist? By today's standards many would say that He was.
Yet, if we cannot fit Jesus' actions and words in today's gospel into our understanding of Who Jesus is, then, once again, we are the ones who need to change. We might not like that He kept the Apostles from bringing the gospel to the Samaritans at first, and we may be confused about His reasoning. We cannot, however, bend the truth, or deny what Jesus really did. Every action of His, every word He said, must fit into our knowledge of Him, and we must accept all of it.
The Jesus that you believe in, what is He like? Does He fit with what we see in the holy Scripture? If not, then ask the true Jesus to help you correct your thinking. There are many false Christs out there; do not listen to them. Instead, beg the true Lord Jesus to help you rid out any falsehoods in your view of Him. It is a matter of eternal life and death.
