Beware Yon Dragons

A regular running monologue of opinions and ideas from a "country priest".

The Solution to All of America's Problems

July 28, 2026

I read and hear comments on a regular basis that clearly show that a large percentage of Americans (easily a majority) believe that politics can help solve America's problems. Liberals say we need more chaos (well, that is not the word they use, but that is what they mean). Conservatives say we just need less liberals (no, they do not say that either, but that is what they are aiming at).

Surprisingly, the Church in America does little to point out that prayer is more powerful than politics. In fact, trying to fix America's problems by focusing on politics is like trying to change the weather by playing with a thermometer. Political action is not the means of godly change (if it were we would be getting better, not worse). Just look at the history of the world; politics are a gauge of people's hearts (like a thermometer!) and not the power to bring about good.

What is the "solution" then? Changed hearts will bring about good and godly change to our nation. If our laws and politicians were all evil (no, we are not there yet, but we are close), and people's hearts were good, then the laws and politicians would not matter. We would all do what is right, and our nation would be blessed for it. As the psalmist said, "change my heart, O God".
