Beware Yon Dragons

A regular running monologue of opinions and ideas from a "country priest".

Advice--Really Bad Advice

Aug. 4, 2026

I was once given advice by a non-catholic minister. She (yes, she) was the "minister" for a large protestant congregation. We were talking about differences between Catholic and protestant, and she said that I too could have a "mega-church" like she did (she did not actually ask whether I wanted something like that, but that is another question for later). Her "rock solid" (her words) method was as follows: always tell people what they want to hear. According to her, this would guarantee that everyone will like you, and more people will come to listen to you.

When I picked my jaw up off the ground, I politely said "interesting". No, I did not take her advice. Aside from the insane consequences of what would happen when people realized that you were lying to them, there is a duty that Catholic priests have to speak "the whole counsel of God" and to give the truth in a loving manner and pray God will work it out in people's hearts. Yes, this presumes a certain amount of discernment for how and when to say things, but it does not allow for "tell them whatever they want to hear".

Sadly, I have come across a few Catholic priests who have told me that is what they do (in spite of the vows they took at their ordination where they promised never to do that very thing!), and I have heard a few laity tell me of experiences they had where it seemed that was what was happening. Anyone can slip into the habit of pleasing people before God, and priests are not magically exempt from it. Pray for those priests who are doing this; ask God to give them courage to fulfill their vocation faithfully. I pray, fervently, that I will never fall into that satanic deception, and I ask you to pray for me as well.
