Beware Yon Dragons

A regular running monologue of opinions and ideas from a "country priest".

Making Changes

Sept. 21, 2026

There is an old axiom that goes something like this: if you keep doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results, that is a sign of insanity. It may not be perfectly accurate, but it is not far from it. Think, just for now, about our spirituality. If you keep falling to a particular sin, and have the exact same response to it each time, but find no real victory over it, it should be quite clear that this is not the wisest method of spiritual discipline.

Consider it this way, if the devil can convince you to use the same ineffective method in dealing with a big sin (especially sexual types of sins), then he has made you fall for his lie. For example, if you keep falling into watching porn on your phone, then something has to change in regard to your phone (but very few ever do anything more to stop the sin than get depressed about it; and maybe go to confession). I have only known of two people who had cell phone-porn addictions that ever did something drastic enough to break the habit.

Remember, the devil does not change; he changes you. He works on your soul slowly and regularly. He makes you get used to bad methods, and then he makes you presume that doing the same things will eventually fix your sinful behavior. You know that it will not, but you want to believe that it will (because, once again, the father of lies followed his usual modus operandi and lied to you). The entire point of repentance is change; a change from living like the world and becoming a new person who lives like our Lord. That is what it means to become godly. God truly does love you, and does not want to leave you in your sin. That is why He sent you His Holy Spirit, so that you can find victory over sin, and live in righteousness. Make the necessary changes and move forward in the path of salvation.
