Opportunities

Sept. 24, 2026

Do you take advantage of opportunities? Most of us like to think that we do, although everyone knows that they have missed certain opportunities in life. Now, the harder question: do you take advantage of bad opportunities? We usually use the word "opportunity" in the positive sense, but sometimes there are things that we can take advantage of that are actually bad.

Take, for example, when someone ignores a sin you commit against them. You have an "opportunity" to remain in sin and let the devil push it deeper into your heart. That is what happens when you are not given a good and godly rebuke for misbehavior; it makes it easier to commit that sin (and a host of other related sins) the next time you are tempted to do so. Thus, that is an "opportunity" that you should not take advantage of, but rather you should seek the alternate opportunity of seeking repentance and reconciliation on your own.

We are all given these sinful opportunities each day (because the devil and his demons are relentless). Someone drops money, and no one except you sees it; you can steal it, or give it back. A woman does not realize she is "revealing" herself, a man can gawk, or turn his eyes away. It all depends on what our personal weaknesses are, but each one of us is tempted by something and we see the sinful behavior as an opportunity for some easy pleasure.

How do you prepare yourself for these things? If you know what your big temptations are (and most people do), then you can be asking God to give you conviction to avoid those things even before they happen. Most just go through their day hoping nothing bad will happen (and it usually does, in spite of our good intentions). What would happen if every one of us were to begin the day praying specifically about those likely temptations that we will encounter? "God please help me to be ready before I am tempted, see the temptation for what it really is, and then say 'no' to it without compromise."

Rather than "taking advantage of the opportunity" to sin, let us "take advantage of the opportunity" to protect ourselves from sin. God is on your side, and is there to help you in every thing you have to go through. Do not doubt His great goodness; He wants to hear your prayers, because He is always willing to help you out of sin. And, He always provides an opportunity for you to overcome those temptations.
