Yes, this is one of my favorite feast days of the year. It is the feast of Ss. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. They are the only three angels named in Scripture. All angels have names but we are given these names so that we can have greater appreciation of the work that they do. Each one of them is assigned tasks by God, and we must be thankful for that work because we are in great need of it.
I have always seen this life as a battle, and so St. Michael is a bit more dear to my heart. The prayer to St. Michael asks him to "defend us in battle" so that rings true to my soul. I have a statue of St. Michael in my home that shows him as a true warrior. He is shown with sword in hand after he has slain a dragon (not likely Satan himself, but it does not say on the statue).
Sometimes people get a bit soft about the faith and do not want to think about the "battle" parts. They want just bunnies and flowers. They do not want anything negative, but that is not the faith that we have been given, it is a pagan degrading of the faith. It takes only those things that are "nice" (which is not a good thing) and refashions the Catholic faith to be just about feeling good.
The faith we have been given is a battle, and though we are not to think of everything in gruesome terms, we cannot ignore that this world hates us and wants us dead. The devil wants to destroy our souls and is constantly sending things against us. If we give in to him we lose the battle. This is why I like today. It is that day that we are reminded about St. Michael's ministry to us; a ministry of war. He is at war with the world along with us, and for us. Let us thank the Lord that St. Michael does his duty, so that we can do ours.
