I like the old Star Trek series (at least most of it). Some of the new stuff is a bit goofy. One of the things I always have struggled with about the series was Gene Roddenberry's view of the future. He believed that once we pushed religion to the side, then humanity would brilliantly overcome all her problems. Yet almost every episode had major disasters that were worse than anything we have ever seen here on Earth today (you do have to keep up the excitement to keep up the ratings after all!).
Yet, with all the technological advances we have made in Roddenberry's direction, we are still a largely miserable people. Children are killing each other more and more (in and out of school); we are still murdering children in the womb; drug addictions are rampant; etc. In fact, if we look at the pattern of the last fifty years since Roddenberry's series, we find that the more we advance in technology the more evil we become. If we are worshiping technology, then why is it not saving us?
Does technology cause evil? No, I am not saying that. I am, however, saying that the widespread infiltration of technology into our lives has made it easier to do evil; after all, the internet is not just a place to find information and entertainment, but also a place to be influenced by new forms of evil never seen before. Learning to walk humbly with technology, and never to become addicted to the point of thinking we cannot do without it, is central our spiritual well being. Let us all work to love God first, and also thank Him for the blessings of technology (while praying also that we would be delivered from its curses).
