Do you struggle with pornography? Do you fall to the sin of "self abuse" regularly? If the statistics are correct, as much as 75% of Catholics fall to this sin on a regular basis! That is a staggering number. Priests are not allowed to speak of what they hear in confession, but they can give general statistics, and those amount to about 50% of Catholics (and if you realize that many Catholics do not go to confession, then the numbers are likely closer to that 75%).
The Church has spoken often about sexual sin, but in this day and age she seems to be more concerned about immigrants and synods. Thus if we go back to what has been said in the past, we find that the greatest remedy for immoral sexual desires, is to fill oneself with a love of what is good. The more we see goodness for what it is, the more we can see evil for what it is. Thus, if we understand what God has provided, then we are less tempted by what the devil tries to provide. A healthy and accurate understanding of marriage will help a person resist those things that can damage a marriage.
In Gaudium et Spes, the Church tells us this very thing. In fact, it uses a phrase to describe the horrible nature of sexual sin, and how it will "fade away" when we see the beautiful nature of godly sexuality. I include that statement here. Commit it to memory; or at least that last phrase (as I used in the title of this post). Referring to a holy matrimonial love, it says,
"This love God has judged worthy of special gifts, healing, perfecting and exalting gifts of grace and of charity. Such love, merging the human with the divine, leads the spouses to a free and mutual gift of themselves, a gift providing itself by gentle affection and by deed; such love pervades the whole of their lives: indeed by its busy generosity it grows better and grows greater. Therefore it far excels mere erotic inclination, which, selfishly pursued, soon enough fades wretchedly away."
