I read a report today about a priest in another country. He has a large percentage of heathen in the region where he ministers, and often finds it difficult to stand for the faith when there is so much opposition. Yet, the article was encouraging us to realize that there is hope, even in the midst of those situations. According to the priest, "God always guides us in how to deal with these challenges".
What was the "solution" to the challenge of heathen religions? Again, according to the priest, he believed God told him to be nice to the heathens. He chose to apply this "word from God" by saying "happy Buddha's birthday" to the Buddhists. He said that it enabled a bunch of "nice people" who were Buddhists to cooperate with the priest's ministry. And now everything is just "nice".
In other words, there is no need to stand for the faith and convert people if we are just nice to them and help them to be nice to us. Yay! I guess this means that the previous 2000 years of our forefathers being willing to die for the faith and refusing to compromise the truth of Christ was not really necessary after all. We could have won over a bunch of people by just being "nice".
If truth were up for grabs, and if it could be changed according to the situation, then we might be able to believe that. Truth is eternal, however, so it does not change. It has always been true that we need to care for the souls of the lost, and bring them to know the saving message of the Christ our Lord. It might give us "gooey" feelings in our tummy if we are just nice and they respond with oodles more of niceness; but it will not, however, save anyone from eternal Hell.
