In today's first reading for Mass, Ezekiel the Prophet has to obey God in a difficult time. His wife died, and he was not given the option even to be able to mourn. He was told his responsibility to God came first. I can slightly understand what he felt. No, my wife has not passed away, but there are many times when I have to obey the Church's requirements, even when I would rather do something with my family.
How often do you experience a bind with God's commands? Do you ever look at a situation and decide it is okay to ignore God's commands because you think you have a special situation? It may seem like good Catholics would not do that, but I hear stories about it frequently. "I knew what the Church said was right, but I didn't think it applied to me in that situation". Subjective ethics are never a good idea.
We do not know the exact reason for the requirements that God put on Ezekiel in today's reading, but we know that God did it for his good. And, we can know the same thing in our situation. God never pushes us to do something that is challenging unless it helps us on the path to Heaven. Let us work to decide beforehand to obey our God first. Regardless of what other "special exceptions" we can come up with, only Jesus is Lord.
