I do not want to sound shmoozy about those events that happened so long ago, but I do think we can reflect on them in a holy manner. I spoke to someone recently who was born years after the twin towers came down. He spoke of it like I speak of Pearl Harbor. It is a point in history that he did not experience. He has no idea what it was like to walk into a break room and see the news on tv, and then spend the majority of the day feeling like you got a gut-punch. Whether you experienced it or not, we all cannot think of it just as a "thing in the past".
It has been long enough for us to ask a very important question: Have we learned anything from our experience? America has not gotten more holy. We have not shown much penitence. We have moved into more immorality, deeper political suicide, and societal destruction. Yeah, it does not appear we have learned very much. When God sent the Babylonians to attack Israel in the seventh century B.C., He told them "this is only the first wave; if you repent you can prevent a second". They did not listen, and were eventually destroyed.
The state of things in these United States is not one to inspire confidence that we are moving toward humility. This means we can expect further judgment. Will it be tomorrow? There is no way of knowing when it will come, but God loves us too much to let it wait for long. That is right: I said He loves us. The judgments of God on His own people always come as a disciplinary action (1 Peter 4:17). We are supposed to be doing the work of turning hearts to God and bringing repentance to our nation (2 Peter 3:11-13). Believe it or not, this can prevent great suffering (there are numerous stories in Scripture that show this).
We can learn from what happened 25 years ago. The only question is, will we learn in time?
