Yes, there is a lot that we need to pray about these days. Our nation is pretty messed up. The economy is not yet in the proverbial tank, but it is quite fragile. Morality is not at a high point. And, to make it worse, Catholics are not largely living faithful to the church's teachings (oh, yes, many Catholics live faithful to the things about which they have been misled about the faith, but that is a sad thing, not a good thing). How will we get out of this yuck into which our Lord has let us wander? Only by the spread of the gospel and the growth of the church.
That is not a tricky way to make everything be about the church. It is the full truth. The Catholic faith has the answer to every one of the world's problems; the world just does not know it, and the church has not yet figured out how to communicate it to the world in the right way. That does not release us from the need of giving to the world what we can, though. We are still responsible to show the world that Christ is Lord, and that His revelation is the means by which the entire world can see what it is doing wrong, and what it is supposed to do in order to correct it.
Thus, what can you do right now to help that? Not everyone can go throughout the world spreading the gospel. Yet, each of you can do your part in helping the church to grow. And what is needed for the growth of the Church in this fallen world? The presence of Christ is what the world needs more than anything else. Our Lord's presence is accomplished in three ways: first, the world encounters Jesus in the Church (since it is the body of Christ); second, the Church brings Christ to the world in the Eucharist (drawing people to convert and receive it is the best way); third, Christ is seen by the world in His priests (since they live In Persona Christi and thus represent Him).
So, how can you help to grow the Church, help the world to know the Eucharist is available to all who submit themselves to God, and help there to be more priests to do the work of Christ? By praying for vocations, which is what we do each time the Ember days arrive (and today is an Ember day!). Make sure you are fasting from meat today (if you already messed up, then do not mess up any more -- abstain now, and choose to give up something else to compensate for your mistake). Above all, pray for those who already have Holy Orders, as well as for those who are preparing to receive ordination. Do this, and we will see the world influenced by the gospel of Christ Jesus our Lord.
