I encountered another "mad trad" the other day. Some Catholics (who are at times a bit soft in their spirituality) often like to call them "toxic trads" (that is not, of course, to say that everyone who uses that term is "soft", just that some of them are). I agree with the idea that someone can be "traditional" in a way that is also "toxic", but that term is so pejorative it does not help.
There is no guarantee that because someone holds to the ancient truths of the faith that they will behave in a holy manner about it. In fact, whenever society goes off the rails (the way ours has), it is common for traditional Catholics to get a bit kooky about some things in the faith (none of us is perfect, and some are even less perfect than others).
I am not about to go into an extensive list of what a "toxic trad" or "mad trad" looks like (every one of those lists that I have read is so specific that it ends up condemning everything that the writer dislikes -- even if it is actually a good thing!). This post is more for the purpose of pointing out some basic things that are bad for traditional Catholics. I will just sum up by referring to the practice as "bad trad".
If almost no one in the Church has the same views as you, and you think that proves you are right, then you are a bad trad. If your only way to deal with the world's problems is to shut yourself off from the world, then you are a bad trad. If you cannot find good in anything that someone you disagree with says, then you are a bad trad. If you are willing to break any rule the Church has in order to keep your opinion, then you are a bad trad.
All of these things are fairly easy to spot, and should be paid attention to. This is not a specific list, as I said, but is rather a generalized idea of behaviors that are almost always present in those who have become "toxic" in their faith, and are "mad" about everything. Catholic tradition is beautiful; Catholic tradition brings great joy; Catholic tradition creates unity among the faithful, and we cannot ignore the importance of practicing it. If we really love the Traditions that God has given us and refuse to give them up, then we will truly be "glad trads".
