We do not know if those who are opposing us building a church in Greene County really understand what they are doing or not, but there is still opposition to us (though it is a bit odd that other christian congregations have easily gotten permission, but we are somehow different?). Yes, there is a general antagonism towards Catholicism in this predominantly protestant area of these USA. Last night the meeting with the County officials ended with a vote of 2 in favor of the permit we need, and 5 against it. Not great, but not horrible. We still have the final meeting next month where the final decision is supposed to be made. Let us pray that the truth will be heard, and not unfortunate misrepresentations of who we are and what we will be like; we know what it is to live in peace with others, even if they doubt we will do so. It is one more instance of those outside the church having no real idea of what it means to be catholic. We easily get lumped in with many groups that are radically different from us, but that has been going on since the first century, so we should not be surprised. As our precious Lord told us, we are to pray for those who are against us, and ask God to show them mercy as we ask Him to provide us with a much needed new church home.
