What is an anti-hero? I do not know who the first one was, but it is not a new concept. The person who is not aiming at being good, but when put into a difficult circumstance, makes good and holy choices. The old classic one is Han Solo from Star Wars, but he became just a "scruffy" good guy.
In one sense, every one of us can be an anti-hero. We like to look up to heroes, but if we are honest we will admit that a hero is a pretty high standard for most of us to reach. The concept of hero is one that is good for us though. We really should look up to "heroes" and use them as examples of goals that we want to achieve some day.
Yet, heroes (especially when we end up worshiping them) always disappoint us. They do something we do not like and then we are tempted to demonize them. I know a number of people who idolized President Trump. They are not as pleased with him now as they were before. I cannot say I ever really "liked" him at all. He was a better choice than the "Nero Caesar" or "Jezebel" that were offered to us.
Yet, now he is not winning a lot of brownie points with those same people (they have told me this directly). This is the problem with politicians (like diapers, they need to changed frequently); they are not really good "heroes", but what if we thought of them (especially our current US President) as more of an "anti-hero"? After all, President Trump is not a Catholic; he does not understand the faith, so we should not expect him to do so.
The (relatively) ok politicians would make better anti-heroes because they (at least most) are more like bad guys who do occasional good things. If we keep this perspective, then we will not worship them (unless we are open to idolatry), and then we will not be disappointed when they blow it. We will be able to keep a healthy and balanced perspective. For me, there are no politicians good enough even to be anti-heroes, but that is at least a better and more godly perspective when we deal with the paltry options that are given us today.
